SA to wait for LTE networks

Despite moves to increase wireless network speeds and capacity by mobile operators, South Africans should not expect high-speed mobile broadband anytime soon.

MTN announced that users on its uncapped services would get an increase of download speed from February 1, to a maximum of 384kbps.

That, however, is a long way from speeds above 10mbps up to 150mbps that some companies are trialling internationally.

"We're rolling out where we can, but we haven't made a decision to go live. There're a couple of challenges: Ecosystem-wise, the LTE devices are still young, I mean it's a new technology, even though it's the most rapidly deployed one," Kanagaratnam Lambotharan chief technology officer of MTN South Africa told News24.

Spectrum is a critical issue for operators and MTN has called on the authorities to make the spectrum available.

Multi-device lifestyle takes over

Following the smartphone explosion that was 2011, research firm comScore predicts the biggest shakeups are yet to come in the mobile market in 2012.

The report, “2012 Mobile Future in Focus”, was published yesterday and highlights key trends driving smartphone adoption, mobile media usage and multi-device media consumption in markets including the US, UK and Japan.

Mobile occupies more time than TV

InMobi, an independent mobile ad network, has announced the results of its comprehensive global Mobile Media Consumption Q4 2011 Survey, which indicate that in South Africa, mobile web users spend 30% of their media time on mobile against 29% on TV and 20% listening to radio.

Mobile consumers recognise the impact of mobile advertising on purchase behaviour and their willingness to transact over mobile:

    Over half of mobile users having conducted mCommerce activities (65%)
    Three quarters planning to conduct mCommerce activities within the next year (82%)
    51% claiming that mobile advertising has introduced them to something new
